Boulder County Public Health’s Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (TEPP) program requests the input of business owners and community members of Niwot on a proposed smoke-free policy update. The goal is to bring this policy in-line with the state law (Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act) and neighboring communities in Boulder County. Unincorporated Boulder County communities, including Niwot, do no have the same protections from secondhand smoke as incorporated communities, this update would ensure smoke-free protections and equity across Boulder County.

Existing code can be viewed here: https://assets.bouldercounty.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/ordinance-smoking.pdf

Proposed updates include:

– Updating language and definitions (in-line with state law)
– Not allowing smoking or vaping within 25 feet of businesses (in line with state law)
– Update language to include electronic vaping devices and protection from secondhand vaping aerosol (in line with state law)
– Not allowing smoking or vaping on bar and restaurant patios (in-line with many Boulder County communities)

We will review these changes in more detail the public virtual meeting and hope to gain insights from business owners and community members on these proposed changes. There will be a public hearing on this ordinance with the Board of County Commissioners.

If you have any questions before the time of the meeting or are unable to attend, you can email Gretchen Smith at gsmith@bouldercounty.org.

We look forward to seeing you and hearing your feedback!
