Say Cheese. CDOT’s new speed cameras are active on Highway 119.

Be aware warnings are now tickets

If you travel between Boulder and Longmont, here’s something to know before your next trip on the Diagonal Highway. CDOT has activated new automated speed cameras along the corridor as part of a broader effort to make the drive safer for everyone.

For the past few months, drivers traveling 10+ mph over the limit have only received warning notices. But on Jan. 12, those warnings turned into $75 civil penalties sent directly to the vehicle’s registered address.

So why the cameras? The Colorado Highway 119 work zone has been a hotspot for dangerous speeding, and automated enforcement is a way to help reduce crashes without requiring police traffic stops. Similar programs across the country have been shown to lower serious crashes and even save lives.

If CO 119 is part of your daily commute, weekend plans or ski route, now’s a great time to take an extra moment to check your speed and drive with care.
